Handling Static IPs with the Calix SMx Integration

The Calix SMx integration allows Sonar to provision subscriber, ONT, and service information in Calix SMx when the required account, inventory, and service conditions are met.

The integration does not provision or manage static IP addresses in Calix SMx. Assigning a static IP in Sonar IPAM does not push that IP assignment to SMx.

Prerequisites

Before using the Calix SMx integration with accounts that require static IPs, make sure the following items are complete:

Overview

Sonar’s Calix SMx integration manages provisioning events for supported subscriber, ONT, and service workflows. It does not manage static IP addressing in Calix SMx.

When services are added to a customer account, provisioning is required for Calix SMx. Calix provisioning requires both a mapped inventory item and a mapped service on the account. When both are present, the Calix provisioning modal appears and allows the user to define the connection properties for the device and service.

What Sonar Manages

Sonar can send provisioning updates to Calix SMx when the required conditions are met. These updates may include subscriber, ONT, and service provisioning details.

What Sonar Does Not Manage

Sonar does not manage static IP addresses in Calix SMx.

Static IPs and Sonar IPAM

Static IPs can still be tracked in Sonar IPAM, but this is separate from Calix SMx provisioning.

These IP assignment workflows do not mean Sonar is pushing static IP configuration into Calix SMx.

Warning and Limitations

Do not tie static IP configuration to an SMx service that Sonar manages.

This applies whether the static IP is sold as part of a bundled service or as a separate line item in Sonar. The integration treats both scenarios the same because it does not manage static IPs.

Use the following workflow for customers with static IPs:

Alarms Update IP Assignment

The Alarms Update IP Assignment setting is not the same as static IP provisioning.

When enabled, IP assignment changes reflected in SMx may populate in Sonar if the required Supernet or Subnet already exists in Sonar IPAM. This is an SMx-originated update into Sonar.

It does not mean Sonar is provisioning static IPs into SMx.

Full Synchronization

A Full Synchronization can be used when Calix SMx data and Sonar data need to be reconciled.

Full Synchronization does not change the static IP limitation. It will not recreate or push static IP assignments into SMx if those IPs must be managed outside the Sonar integration.

Operational Best Practices

For accounts with static IPs, use a controlled process before making service changes.

Troubleshooting

  1. If the Calix integration is failing or shows as down:
  2. If VLANs, ports, or services are incorrect after provisioning:
  3. If a static IP disappears after reprovisioning:
  4. If an ONT is duplicated:
